  • NGO – potential and scope of activities

The activities of non-governmental organizations are becoming more and more noticeable in the public space. The NGO sector encourages various actions and enables the implementation of tasks suitable for local communities. In addition, it complements the activities of public administration. What do NGOs do and what are their capabilities? In this article, we present how wide their range is and what impact on the daily lives of Poles they have.

What are NGOs?

NGOs are so-called third-sector entities that work not for profit (non-profit). They are independent and created to carry out projects to serve different groups, e.g., seniors, people with disabilities, and youth. What is more, they contribute to building civil society. They are increasingly important, activating and raising funds for specific goals. They perform social, political, and economic functions.

Just minorities?

Non-governmental organizations are associated primarily with unions, associations, and foundations that work for the benefit of excluded people. In recent years, these have been mainly seniors, who comprise an increasing percentage of the population. Organizations try to support them by activating them and creating a meeting space.

NGOs also work for national, sexual, and other minorities, but they support local government units more and more and help implement public duties. 39% of organizations address the needs of residents of a commune or a district, and 81% maintain relationships with local government. They are of great importance in supporting the development of civil society. They raise awareness of how much we can do for the nearest environment.

They are active in multiple areas, such as:

  • sport and recreation,
  • hobby,
  • tourism,
  • ecology.

They carry out social assistance activities. Thanks to NGO cooperation, many Polish cities and towns have gained additional support for people with disabilities, single mothers, or families in need.

What is their potential?

Non-governmental organizations gather enthusiasts, so their agency is enormous. It refers in particular to public awareness and opinion-forming activities. To operate officially, these organizations must be registered, have a proper legal status, keep books, and submit annual reports and other necessary documents. All this requires commitment, relevant knowledge, or support – for example, accounting services. The organizations must lead transparent activities and define clear objectives to obtain funds.

Some NGOs also decide to do business. This often means hiring, that is, giving work, which is important especially in small, local communities. However, it brings new responsibilities and significantly changes the nature of such organization. It all depends on what the organization does and what it needs to grow.

Can all NGOs collect 1.5%?

Most often, we associate non-governmental organizations with requests for 1% (from this year, it is 1.5%). However, NGOs can collect it if they have obtained public benefit status in court under the Act on public benefit and volunteer work. Collecting and settling 1.5% for individuals is vital for NGOs. The public administration cannot do it. These funds are extremely important for many people in need. An organization can also collect 1.5% to finance its own activities.

Is it worth it?

As you can see, the scope of activities of NGOs is extensive – from local ones to those famous in the media, from commissioning tasks to providing services. They have many powers. However, writing applications, implementing projects, or obtaining grants require considerable commitment and knowledge. Despite this, more and more people decide to run NGOs because it brings positive results and provides many opportunities and satisfaction.
